In either case, networking can either feel uncomfortable or unproductive, and you end up wasting a lot of time for little payoff. This isn't good for your business.

The key is to get the balance right, and it's simpler than you think.

Traditional networking advice has left a lot of people totally confused and financially unfulfilled.

The problem is that we've been brainwashed by messages that were well intended originally, but have since been interpreted way too literally to the point where they no longer make any sense.

Take this one for example: "Give first." Great message, but after so many iterations, many people have interpreted this to mean, "Giving is good, taking is bad."

Therefore, no one ever wants to be seen taking anything. We'll go to extremes not to be seen as taking. But think about it. There can't be a giver unless there's someone on the other end to take that gift.

Still, despite the confusion, you give...and give...and give. But nothing happens. You go to meeting after meeting, talk to lots of people, collect tons of business cards, and agree to numerous one-on-ones over coffee. Yet in the end no one ends up making any money except Starbucks.

But if you didn't network, where would new business come from?

Unlike the Fortune 500, you don't have a huge advertising budget to build awareness and convince potential customers to buy from you.

Entrepreneurs, independent sales people, consultants, coaches and other service-based professionals have to compete through word of mouth and referrals. So it's about relationships, and getting others to recommend you and be your de facto virtual sales force.

But first, they need to really understand what you do, know your specific target market, and have the ability to reach that audience. But there's one more thing that you can't forget...

People need a strong reason to recommend you over others who do what you do. Liking you is one reason, and you may get a few referrals here and there. But to have a sustainable business, you want a large and steady pipeline to new customers that you can set up once and pretty much run on autopilot.

This takes a whole new level of thinking about your business and a whole new approach to the kinds of relationships you should spend your time building.

But here's the thing - building relationships this way doesn't come naturally to a lot of people. They got into business because they had a marketable skill - as a graphic designer, sales person, career coach, etc. And they've built relationships in the past mostly from proximity - with school mates, co-workers, and people in their neighborhood - rather than purposefully.

They're really unclear about how to build relationships that help their business.

I admit it, when I left corporate America, I didn't know how to build strategic relationships either. But since I've been deeply immersed in the world of networking for nearly 9 years--writing about it, speaking about it and studying it from all angles--I've enjoyed a lot of successes from the contacts I've made.

As a first-time author without an agent, for example, I got my book deal from McGraw-Hill with a single email sent to the right person in my network. And when I knew I wanted a top agent for my 2nd book, I used Facebook to attract one of the best.

I've been asked to speak at companies as diverse as Google, Boeing, 3M and KPMG on the topic of networking, I've appeared on ABCNews,Fox Business News, CNNRadio, and NPR, and been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USAToday, Forbes.com, BusinessWeek and CNBC.com.

Early on in my business I had some lean times as I was figuring out my niche, getting known, and finding the right style for building the right relationships. I didn't have the money for a new computer, which by then was already a few years old and fast becoming a liability.

It was constantly freezing up. I was stopping my work every few minutes to save my spreadsheet or my word document in case of a crash. I never turned off my computer at night because it would take half an hour to shut down and 20 minutes in the morning to boot back up. I was constantly running low on virtual memory so applications were painfully slow and it would take ages for web pages to load.

Eventually I stopped to calculate what tolerating all of this was costing my business. I was shocked. By a conservative estimate, I figured that my productivity was about 70% of what it could be.

That equated to losing 1.5 days in a 5-day workweek! That was crazy!

When I stopped to think about that, I decided I couldn't afford NOT to invest in a new computer right away. I wasn't used to carrying a balance on my credit cards, always paying them off every month, but I decided that I'd rather go into debt for a short period than continue with the ongoing frustration of dealing with this old technology.

Then something very interesting happened. Within a few days of ordering my new laptop, keyboard and big screen monitor, I got a referral for a project that immediately brought in $15,000. More than enough to cover the computer expense. And then soon after a $9,000 assignment followed, an $11,500 speaking gig, and a multiple six-figure project, all within a span of a few months.

I thought that once I had the new clients, I could get the new computer. But the truth is, once I decided to tackle the technology challenge head on first, I finally got into the right mind space to attract a ton of new business.

All it took was a decision...a decision to make the long overdue investment, and find a way to make it work financially. There's always a way.

So think about what you'd fix in your business infrastructure if you won just one or two new clients or closed one or two more deals.

What would you upgrade? What would you improve? What would you expand? Make a list. Sometimes it's great to have a wish list of all your wants and desires to help you prioritize.

How would these things make you more effective in your business and more successful?

Next think about what you'd change if you got a lot of new clients or at least a much steadier flow of them? How would that massively change not just your business but your life?
